Nothing makes you feel better than brightening someone's day! During the month of April we had colorful pots in the reception room for patients and families to decorate with their fingerprints!! Later, we turned their prints into fun animals and pictures!!
At the beginning of May we filled our decorated pots with bright flowers and delivered them to the residents of Brookdale Bassett Park next door! There they found homes on tables throughout the dining room!!
Thank you so much to everyone who left their print on one of our flower pots or helped us plant a flower!! They turned out so cute!
No April Showers necessary to make these May flowers ready for delivery!!

Even though it may not feel like it today, colder weather is here! We all know how cold it can get here in WNY, and we know how important it is to make sure we always have our gloves and hats to keep our children and ourselves safe and warm.
That's why as weather changes we want to make sure that as many children as possible have the warm clothing they need for the upcoming winter.
For the entire month of November we will be collecting new gloves, hats and scarves for children ages 5 to 18.
Help us keep kids warm by bringing a donation to your appointment or stop in anytime this month during office hours!
All the donations will go to Child & Family Services, a not-for-profit organization that strengthens families, and promotes the well-being of children right here in our hometown. Learn more about this great organization here.
We know what wonderful families we have as part of our practice and thank you all in advance for your help!!

Posted August 20, 2014:5 Tips For Back to School Smiles
A new school year is just around the corner!
Keep your kids in great shape with these 5 TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILDREN'S TEETH HAPPY when they go back in the classroom:
1.) After breakfast, before leaving for school, make sure your child brushes well with a fluoridated toothpaste. Brushing right after a meal helps clean teeth and stops bad breath.
2.) Pack your child’s lunch box with healthy lunch food and snacks such as lean meats, whole grain breads, low-fat yogurt or cheeses, fruits and veggies, and seeds or nuts. Besides being packed with nutrients, certain fruits and veggies can even help clean the teeth and gums. Remember to make treats a treat. Save sugary sticky snacks like cookies, cake, brownies, and candy for birthdays and other special occasions.
3.) If your child's school allows them to chew gum, chewing gum that contains Xylitol for a few minutes in between lunch and afternoon classes can help stimulate saliva to buffer the acid and help dislodge food particles from the mouth. Xylitol, a natural sweetener, is a particularly good option since studies have shown that consistent exposure to Xylitol can reduce cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth.
4.) If your children have braces, have them brush or rinse well with water after lunch. If they wear a removable retainer, they should clean it well after each meal and be sure to always place it in the case while eating.
5.) Before the school year starts, schedule a dental visit to make sure there are no problems to distract your child during the school year.
Following these tips will help ensure happy teeth for the whole school year!!

Posted February 12, 2014:National Children's Dental Health Month
Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to promote the importance of oral health.
Developing good habits at an early age helps children to have a lifetime of healthy teeth. As advocates for our community's pediatric oral health we are helping to spread the word on healthy smiles to those around us.
During the month of February members of our staff are visiting local schools and daycare centers to teach kids and their teachers how important healthy teeth are! We will talk to the students about why our teeth are important, how proper brushing and snacking habits keep our teeth happy and healthy, and introduce them to people and things they might see at a visit to the dentist.
These fun, interactive presentations are a great way for kids to learn and provide us with a unique opportunity to get involved with our community!

Posted August 1, 2012:New Office Employee
Every Wednesday and Thursday morning, patients are greeted with a warm and fuzzy reception when they arrive for their visits at Dr. Paul Weiss’ pediatric dental office in Williamsville. The newest staff member, Brooke, a four-year-old Golden Retriever, is using her talents as a certified therapy dog (Certified by Therapy Dogs International) to interact with and entertain patients and their families. She works the reception area with her handler, offering and receiving lots of affection and hugs and occasionally chasing down her favorite ball. Her calm and gentle demeanor, friendliness to strangers and receptiveness to physical contact make her the perfect addition to the playful child-oriented surroundings of the office. The match between Brooke and the patients seems perfect. As a Golden Retriever, her primary purpose in life is to please those around her. She gets the love that she needs and she can help take the child’s and parents’ mind off their fears.
Like all therapy dogs, Brooke was required to pass a rigorous training program and evaluation. She mastered basic obedience and proved she is able to accept common medical appliances, clumsy handling (petting) and various distractions. Therapy dogs have been shown to ease tensions, lower blood pressure and increase positive attitudes. Traditionally, their services are utilized in hospitals, schools, and retirement homes. Knowing Brooke’s temperament, Dr. Paul recognized an opportunity to offer another source of comfort to his patients and increased relaxation to the office atmosphere. Brooke has become a celebrity with patients, who now make it a point to schedule their appointments on Thursday, now known as “Brooke Day.”

I'm so pleased that you and our other patient families who follow our prevention tools and techniques can avoid such issues. However, this is a big trend in the general public. So please feel free to pass the article along to other parents in your circle.
